Biden Weaponizes DOJ Against Ticketmaster in Desperate Bid for Swiftie Votes

Election IntegrityBiden Weaponizes DOJ Against Ticketmaster in Desperate Bid for Swiftie Votes

In the latest chapter of political maneuvering, President Joe Biden, undeniably fixated on securing votes, is burdening American taxpayers yet again. This time, it’s through the Justice Department’s recent actions against Live Nation Entertainment, parent company of Ticketmaster, under the pretext of antitrust litigation. This transparent political gambit aims to endear the administration to a considerable voter bloc—Taylor Swift fans—while disregarding market realities and the principles of free enterprise.

Last November saw the highly anticipated presale for Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” fall into chaos, with unprecedented demand crashing Ticketmaster’s website. With 14 million fans and scalper bots converging on the platform, the resulting system overload drew Swift’s ire and an outpouring of fan frustration. In response, the Justice Department initiated an antitrust investigation, culminating in a lawsuit to dissolve the 2010 merger between Live Nation and Ticketmaster. DOJ’s recent actions illustrate the administration’s enduring commitment to leveraging taxpayer dollars to court voters, paralleling its previous efforts in the domain of student loans.

The lawsuit against Live Nation, allegedly to rectify the concert ticketing debacle, conveniently overlooks key economic truths. Breaking up the company wouldn’t have mitigated the overwhelming demand for Swift’s tickets. Vertical integration, a standard in many industries, enables companies like Live Nation to achieve economies of scale and better serve consumers. The concert industry is hardly a monopoly; fierce competition exists from StubHub, SeatGeek, Vivid Seats, and others, debunking the notion that breaking up Live Nation would enhance consumer access or lower prices.

Moreover, the DOJ’s case sidesteps the fundamental role of market dynamics in ticket pricing. It’s not Ticketmaster setting exorbitant prices but the artists themselves. With digital platforms expanding market reach, ticket prices now more closely align with their true market value. This natural adjustment stems from supply and demand economics, where limited availability and high demand propel prices skyward. Rather than acknowledging these market forces, the administration opts for political theatre, demonizing businesses for operating within the very fundamentals of a free market.

This episode mirrors the administration’s student loan forgiveness scheme, another blatant bid to curry favor with disillusioned voters. Rather than addressing the root causes of inflated tuition fees or the economic impracticality of certain degree programs, Biden’s administration chose the expedient route of taxpayer-funded handouts. This pattern of pandering is clear: when facing dissatisfied voters, it’s easier for politicians to dole out financial appeasements than to confront larger systemic issues within higher education or market economics.

As the Justice Department parades its Swift-inflected campaign, it’s crucial to recognize the underlying motivations. This isn’t about consumer protection or championing fair competition. It’s an election-year strategy, designed to distract from pressing economic issues and garner support from key demographics at the taxpayer’s expense. The DOJ’s actions set a dangerous precedent of government interference in the free market, undermining personal responsibility and the natural economic order that defines true liberty.

Undoubtedly, the administration’s stance reflects deep ideological divides concerning how our nation navigates its economic and social challenges. Yet, this trajectory of governmental intervention, masked as consumer advocacy, erodes the very fabric of liberty. As elections near, voters will increasingly see through these machinations, valuing genuine solutions over performative tactics.
