Fauci and NIH Conspired to Discredit Lab Leak Theory, Emails Reveal Deception and Censorship

Free SpeechFauci and NIH Conspired to Discredit Lab Leak Theory, Emails Reveal Deception and Censorship

In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, a crucial but hidden battle over the virus’s origins began to unfold. On February 1, 2020, during a conference call, Dr. Anthony Fauci and NIH Director Francis Collins urged an international assembly of scientists to produce a paper discrediting the lab leak theory. Dr. Kristian Andersen, a Danish evolutionary biologist, was specifically encouraged to spearhead this effort.

A subsequent email from Collins, obtained by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, called for swift action, warning that a lack of convincing natural origins evidence could empower so-called conspiracy theorists, to the detriment of scientific discourse and international harmony. Andersen’s follow-up email explicitly stated the objective: to counteract what he referred to as “crackpot theories” about the virus having originated in a lab.

The fruit of these efforts was the March 2020 publication in *Nature Medicine* titled “The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2,” which asserted the improbability of a laboratory origin of the virus. This publication became one of the most influential scientific papers of the 21st century, shaping public discourse, informing policy decisions, and becoming a tool in one of the most expansive free speech crackdowns in recent American history. Yet, a growing consensus among experts indicates that its conclusions were fundamentally flawed.

Fauci and Collins appeared to be motivated by a need to divert attention from the NIH’s involvement in funding gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the suspected source of the virus. In 2021, Fauci testified before Congress, stating that the NIH “has not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.” This assertion was later refuted by NIH Principal Deputy Director Lawrence Tabak, who confirmed the funding of such research through the nonprofit EcoHealth Alliance. This discrepancy raises significant questions about Fauci’s transparency and motivations during the pandemic response.

Andersen’s reasons for authoring the paper seem more straightforward: a mere four days after the paper’s publication, Andersen received a staggering $8.9 million research grant from Fauci’s department. Such timing suggests a quid pro quo scenario where Andersen’s “scientific” findings, which were predetermined, bought him financial support and credibility, which Fauci, in turn, used to bolster their mutual narrative during public briefings.

The role of mainstream and social media in this saga is equally troubling. Legacy media figures, influenced by partisan leanings, hastened to dismiss the lab leak theory, vilifying its proponents. MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, for instance, dismissed the theory as a right-wing concoction, and years later, his partial concession did little to mend the reputational damage inflicted. Similarly, Apoorva Mandavilli of the *New York Times* disparaged the lab leak theory as being rooted in racism, a claim that stifled objective discussion on social media platforms, which was crucial for public understanding.

Social media companies took their cues from the mainstream media, labeling lab leak speculations as misinformation and sometimes banning accounts that questioned the official narrative. It has now been revealed that the Biden administration complicitly pressured Facebook to censor posts supporting the lab leak theory.

For the public to regain trust in the scientific establishment and the media, a comprehensive truth and reconciliation commission regarding the pandemic response is essential. Those responsible for promoting disinformation and censorship must be held accountable. Only through transparency and accountability can we begin to repair the trust that has been so severely damaged by this orchestrated effort to suppress dissenting voices on the origins of COVID-19. The journey towards understanding the true origins of the virus and ensuring a free and open public discourse must continue unabated.
