In response, Francisco Sanchez “Wero Motas” Nunez Rincon, a high-ranking cartel enforcer, deployed his henchmen to set up roadblocks and engage in fierce shootouts with police to shield their leader.
Reports from the ground indicated an arrest early in the day but ongoing sporadic clashes suggested authorities came perilously close to apprehending Nunez Rincon, who managed to evade capture. Tuesday’s ambush in the Palmares neighborhood marked the bloodiest clash, culminating in the killing of two police officers while the cartel gunmen fled the scene undeterred.
The bloodshed did not spare political figures either. Leticia Salazar, a mayoral candidate, found herself caught in the crossfire while canvassing in the Las Brisas neighborhood. A video she posted on social media depicted her harrowing experience, with her campaign team taking refuge in a local home to escape the bullets.
