American airports are becoming perilous points of entry due to the flawed handling of inadmissible travelers, posing significant risks to national security and reinforcing the urgency for robust immigration reforms. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are purportedly failing to adequately track and manage these foreign nationals, leading to substantial security lapses that endanger America’s safety and sovereignty.
In a detailed letter shared with Breitbart News, Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) expressed deep concerns about the current procedures and policies. Inadmissible travelers—foreign nationals denied entry for various reasons by CBP agents—are often released into the U.S. interior with instructions to return for their deportation flights. However, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) report unveiled that nearly 67,000 such travelers were identified at U.S. airports between October 2021 and May 2023, with almost 400 released into the public from one undisclosed airport. Alarmingly, nearly half did not return for their scheduled removal flights.
The report highlighted procedural failures within CBP, revealing that 77 out of at least 168 travelers who failed to attend their removal flights were not issued the necessary Notices to Appear (NTA) in immigration court. This dereliction was attributed to CBP’s insufficient tracking system and inadequate staffing, exacerbating a troubling security deficit. Moreover, ICE leadership further compounded the issue by instructing officers to deny overnight detention requests from CBP due to staffing and bed space constraints. Despite having access to around 80 beds out of a 540-bed facility, the intricate paperwork and medical screenings required for detention deterred ICE officers from complying with these requests, leaving inadmissible travelers free and unsupervised.
Such systemic failures underscore the vulnerabilities within our border security framework. The inability to detain or track inadmissible travelers effectively introduces a high-risk avenue for illegal immigration and potential terrorism. The pressing need for comprehensive reform in handling immigration processes at American airports is clear. Ensuring adequate staffing and resources at both CBP and ICE, alongside stringent adherence to procedural mandates, is critical to safeguard the United States from these persistent threats.
