Steele, speaking on Fox News’s “America’s Newsroom,” denounced these strategies as patronizing and reductive, implying that they reinforce racist stereotypes by suggesting that benefits are only accessible due to skin color. This narrative, she insisted, unfairly confines black individuals to a predetermined political and cultural pigeonhole, merely based on their racial identity.
The podcast host further emphasized that there are many pressing issues within the black community that are overshadowed by these proposed policies. For instance, rather than focusing on relaxing regulations for marijuana or selectively researching diseases such as sickle-cell, initiatives could be directed towards broader issues that affect Americans of all backgrounds and foster equality without racial bias.
A telling New York Times/Sienna poll indicates that only 71% of black registered voters currently support Harris’s presidential bid. This figure is notably lower than historically expected majorities for Democratic candidates, suggesting a shifting sentiment. Concurrently, former President Donald Trump is seeing an increase in support, with 18% of black registered voters expressing approval for his candidacy—a significant rise compared to past elections.
Black voters represented 13.5% of all eligible voters in 2020, and as per the Pew Research Center, this proportion is predicted to rise to 14% by 2024.
