Prominent Chinese Economist Vanishes After Criticizing Xi Jinping’s Regime

Free SpeechProminent Chinese Economist Vanishes After Criticizing Xi Jinping’s Regime

The recent disappearance of prominent Chinese economist Zhu Hengpeng is a striking example of the lengths to which dictatorial regimes will go to suppress dissent and maintain their grip on power. Zhu, a deputy director at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), vanished after criticizing the profound economic missteps of Xi Jinping’s regime in a private WeChat discussion.

Zhu’s detention followed remarks criticizing China’s weakening economy and indirectly challenging Xi’s mortality. While the specifics of Zhu’s comments remain undisclosed, his sudden disappearance speaks volumes about the dangerous climate for dissent in China. The Chinese government has not commented on the case, revealing nothing about Zhu’s status, charges, or legal representation, further exemplifying the opaque and repressive nature of the regime.

Before his fall, Zhu was a respected figure within the Chinese elite, holding significant roles such as deputy secretary for the Chinese Communist Party at CASS and a leadership position at the state-owned China Meheco Group. His criticisms, however, brought him directly into the crosshairs of a state intolerant of any questioning of its policies.

Zhu’s proposals, such as having young Chinese fund their parents’ pensions to bridge a funding gap, were met with outrage on social media, highlighting the dire straits of youth unemployment and social despair under Xi’s rule. The extreme reaction to his suggestions underscores the precarious socio-economic situation in China, one that could be likened to a ticking time bomb.

Following these contentious comments, Zhu disappeared from public life, missing a crucial academic conference on May 25 and subsequently being expunged from its records. His erasure extends to his entire digital footprint, effectively rewriting history to fit the narrative of a paranoid state apparatus.

CASS itself has been the subject of intense political indoctrination, mandating obedience to Party doctrine on economic matters and stifling any dissent through the “Ten Prohibitions.” This draconian policy forbids discussions on sensitive topics and relationships with foreign entities, tightening the ideological noose around its intellectual community. CASS President Gao Xing’s declaration that staff should “be fearful in their hearts, careful with their words, and restrained in their actions” encapsulates the oppressive atmosphere imposed by Xi’s loyalists.

Comparisons of Zhu’s fate to that of Alibaba founder Jack Ma, who criticized Party policies and subsequently vanished only to reappear months later under state scrutiny, serve as a grim reminder of the fate awaiting those who dare to challenge the regime. The case of Defense Minister Li Shangfu, who disappeared under dubious corruption charges, further highlights the broad reach of Xi’s purges.

As Xi Jinping launches stimulus programs in an attempt to jolt China’s stagnant economy, the suppression of dissenting voices among high-ranking Party members indicates an acute sensitivity to criticism. The regime’s attempts to squash any form of economic critique are illustrative of its desperation and precarious hold on power.

Ultimately, Zhu Hengpeng’s ordeal serves as a poignant reminder of the perils faced by those who stand up against authoritarian control, and it underscores the urgent need for liberty and transparent governance. As citizens of freedom-oriented nations, it is our responsibility to speak out against such tyranny and support the oppressed in their struggle for basic human rights.
