Under the new leadership of Alex Soros, son of renowned donor George Soros, Democracy PAC’s spending practices have changed. The PAC has decreased its overall disbursements by over $14 million compared to the previous cycle. During the 2020 elections, Democracy PAC spent more lavishly, exceeding $81.5 million in supporting liberal initiatives and candidates.
Alex Soros’s stewardship marks a departure from his father’s strategies as the PAC reallocated priorities in its financial contributions. Historically, a substantial amount was directed towards “Justice and Public Safety PACs” — entities focused on electing liberal prosecutors. While de-emphasizing criminal justice reform through Democracy PAC, Alex Soros redirected $60 million from a nonprofit under the Open Society Foundations into the PAC, indicating a strategic consolidation of funds. Despite the PAC reducing its focus on this front, the Soros network continues to support criminal justice through other channels.
The 2024 election cycle exposed vulnerabilities in the Soros-backed initiatives, with a significant number of Soros-linked prosecutors facing defeat at the polls. This outcome underscores the challenges faced by progressive agendas in maintaining influence in today’s political landscape.
In alignment with shifting priorities, Alex Soros directed more resources towards race-centered organizations. Grantees like Black PAC received $15 million, highlighting a commitment to addressing racial injustices and expanding voter engagement. Contributions to Senate Majority PAC, Future Forward PAC, and House Majority PAC totaled $24.5 million during the 2024 cycle, a noticeable increase from the $17.5 million distributed in 2020.
