Governor Henry McMaster of South Carolina proudly reinforced his faith in the state’s robust voter registration system following allegations from a state legislator that illegal immigrants were being registered to vote. These concerns were brought forth by Republican State Representative Adam Morgan, who pointed fingers at state agencies for allegedly attempting to enroll noncitizens.
In early October, Governor McMaster requested an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) after Morgan flagged the state’s Medicaid office for supposedly dispatching voter registration forms to a noncitizen refugee repeatedly. The matter sparked significant attention, with Morgan standing at the forefront of the push for election integrity.
“The SLED investigation has reaffirmed what we’ve known all along – that the integrity of South Carolina’s voter registration system is intact,” Governor McMaster stated confidently. “Our state agencies are diligently complying with both state and federal voter registration laws, with no evidence of illegal activities uncovered. Furthermore, the SLED report underscores that our stringent citizenship verification processes are actively preventing non-citizens from infiltrating our voter rolls.”
Despite the findings, Representative William Timmons, also a Republican, publicly challenged Morgan’s assertions. He took to social media, accusing Morgan of fabricating the issue to draw attention to his flagging Congressional campaign. “Adam’s baseless accusations have not only wasted taxpayer dollars but also subjected our diligent election workers to unnecessary threats,” Timmons posted on X.
Adam Morgan, undeterred by the criticism, retorted vehemently. “My so-called ‘Republican’ opponent has no qualms about non-citizens receiving voter registration forms in his district, dismissing it as a ‘lie.’ Yet, the investigation validated the occurrence, mandated by federal law!”
Morgan, who is campaigning against Timmons for his House seat, has rallied significant support from hard-line conservatives, championing himself as the fighter for stricter measures. As the leader of the state’s Freedom Caucus, Morgan is determined to bolster the ranks of staunch conservatives in the House, a stark contrast to what he depicts as Timmons’ complacency.
Timmons, now vying for a fourth term, must navigate this latest controversy as Morgan and his supporters seek to establish a firmer grasp on conservative values within the legislature.
