President-elect Donald Trump’s significant inroads with Hispanic and other minority voters illustrate a shift away from racial determinism in political trends. This development underscores an important ideological point: demographics are not destiny, and appealing to diverse voter groups on the basis of shared values and concerns yields significant results.
Traditionally, the assumption has been that an increasingly diverse electorate would favor Democrats, cementing their majority. However, Trump’s record-breaking 46% of the Hispanic vote, as well as notable support from Black and Asian voters, challenges this preconception. Particularly striking is the case of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, where Trump transformed substantial deficits into tight races. In Hidalgo County, he turned a previous 40-point loss to Hillary Clinton into a narrow 3-point victory against Kamala Harris. Similarly, in Miami-Dade County, Florida, Trump’s appeal to both lower and upper-class Hispanics resulted in impressive gains, including an astonishing 63-point shift in Doral, a community of predominantly immigrant voters.
These electoral shifts have significant implications for the Republican Party’s approach. The lesson here is clear: when candidates engage with diverse communities, addressing their specific concerns such as economic opportunity, public safety, and border security, racial polarization can be diminished. As demonstrated in New York City, Hispanic communities voiced substantial apprehension regarding crime and economic stability, aligning with Trump’s policies over traditional party loyalties. Voters like my Dominican doorman, previously loyal to Clinton and Biden, switched to Trump out of frustration with local policies that appeared to prioritize illegal immigrants at the expense of hardworking citizens.
For conservatives, this trend signals a vital opportunity to embrace a more inclusive approach that speaks to all Americans’ needs, regardless of racial background. Rather than fearing immigration as a threat to political power, conservatives should recognize that immigrant populations often share core conservative priorities: strong economic prospects, safe communities, and opportunities for future generations. Conservative policies that promote school choice, economic growth, and law enforcement resonate with these communities, and as evidenced by the election, provide a pathway to gain their support.
The election results offer a vision of an America that transcends rigid identity politics. The narrative that voting patterns must align with racial or ethnic identities is being replaced by a more nuanced understanding of individual voter preferences.
