Barge Collision Shuts Down Pelican Island Bridge Sparks Oil Spill in Galveston

Top NewsBarge Collision Shuts Down Pelican Island Bridge Sparks Oil Spill in Galveston

On Wednesday morning, a barge collision resulted in the closure of the Pelican Island Bridge, a critical structure linking Pelican Island to Galveston. This unfortunate incident has left Pelican Island completely inaccessible by vehicle, raising significant concerns for residents and businesses.

Galveston officials confirmed that the collision, which occurred around 10 a.m., fortunately did not result in any injuries. However, SkyFOX footage revealed striking damage to the bridge, with debris, including sections of railroad tracks, scattered onto the barge.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, an oil spill has been reported in the bay as a result of the collision. The U.S. Coast Guard is actively assessing the spill’s extent and initiating measures for containment and cleanup. The response has also mobilized emergency management personnel from the City of Galveston, Texas A&M University at Galveston, state agencies, fire and police departments, and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

TxDOT is tasked with inspecting the damage to the bridge to determine its structural integrity and safety—a process that must be thorough before any reopening can be considered. For now, Galveston police have set up detours to manage the diverted traffic. Harborside Drive remains open for east-west transit, but drivers will find no northbound access toward Pelican Island from 51st Street and Harborside.

Texas A&M University at Galveston, situated on Pelican Island, is currently evaluating the impact on its campus and is committed to relaying information through their emergency alert system, email, and social media.

This developing situation demands close attention, and further updates will be provided as the response progresses. Stay tuned for more information.
