Frank Ábrego, soon to be Panama’s Public Security Minister, has been clear in his recent statements about the new administration’s focus on curbing the influx of U.S.-bound migrants traveling through the perilous Darién Gap jungle trail. This crackdown is a key initiative promised by President-Elect José Raúl Mulino, a staunch conservative set to begin a five-year term on July 1st.

Mulino’s firm stance on closing the Darién Gap aligns with his campaign commitments and reflects a broader conservative vision for Panama. On Thursday, he revealed the appointed members of his cabinet, including Ábrego, who emphasized that the new government has already initiated diplomatic engagements and international studies to achieve this goal, making it clear that securing the nation’s borders is a top priority.

Ábrego also noted that establishing physical barriers like walls is not feasible; instead, the focus will be on setting up checkpoints to intercept and deport migrants. This strategic approach aims to significantly reduce the number of unauthorized crossings through increased border security measures and deportation protocols.

According to Panamanian government statistics, the number of migrants crossing the Darién Gap reached a staggering 520,000 in 2023, more than doubling the 247,784 recorded in 2022. The majority of these migrants hailed from Venezuela, Ecuador, Haiti, and China. This surge further solidifies the necessity of Mulino’s decisive action to clamp down on this uncontrolled migrant route.

Reiterating his campaign pledge, Mulino recently affirmed his commitment to not only deport migrants but also to dismantle the notion of Panama as a mere transit point. His administration’s policies aim to respect human rights while ensuring national security, emphasizing that the Darien should not be an uncontrolled pathway for those heading to the U.S.

Ábrego, with a seasoned background as the first director of Panama’s National Border Service (Senafront) from its inception in 2008 until 2016, is well-equipped for this task. His experience includes successful operations against the Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), showcasing his capability in handling high-stakes security challenges.

Panama’s new conservative leadership under Mulino marks a significant shift towards reclaiming and protecting national sovereignty. By focusing on stringent border control and addressing the migrant crisis head-on, this administration underscores its commitment to uphold the liberty and security of the nation.
