He also penned the foreword to a contentious book, “Possible Love — Homosexual Persons and Christian Morality,” by Father Aristide Fumagalli, known as “the Italian version of Fr. James Martin.”
The final appointee, Archbishop Bruno Forte of Chieti-Vasto, gained notoriety as the author of sections on homosexuality in the interim document of the first Synod on the Family in 2014, which controversially aimed to introduce an acceptance of homosexual relationships within the Church. Forte caused additional controversy in 2023 by inviting prayers for participants in Gay Pride events during June.
These appointments were strategically announced just days after Pope Francis faced backlash from certain LGBT groups. The Pope had reiterated the Church’s stance against allowing homosexuals into seminary training, asserting that there already exists an excess of “faggotry” within the Church.
