This trend warrants our attention, as it unveils deeper ideological fractures and questions the country’s future trajectory.
A recent Blueprint poll highlights that just 42% of voters aged 18-30 feel proud to be American, with a staggering 64% believing America is in decline. More alarmingly, half of these young voters describe the nation in stark terms such as a “hellscape,” “dystopia,” or a “dying empire.” This growing discontent signals an urgent need for a renewed focus on American values and patriotism, pillars that have historically united and uplifted the nation.
Contributing to this narrative is the prevalent view among young voters that America’s role on the global stage is less benevolent than traditionally believed. While only 48% consider the United States to be a “good guy,” a mere 33% see it as a force for good in the world. Such perceptions are bolstered by a significant portion of young Americans who endorse anti-colonialist notions: 38% see America as a global imperial oppressor, 48% fear America is on the brink of fascism, 45% support reparations for black Americans, and 36% believe in abolishing prisons and police as currently structured.
The erosion of belief in the American Dream is another critical issue. Many young voters hold the view that systemic racial and social prejudices are ingrained in American institutions, and that the American Dream remains elusive for minorities. This belief undermines the foundational ethos that hard work and meritocracy can lead to success and prosperity for all.
Adding to this grim outlook is the overarching cynicism towards the political establishment. A striking 65% of young voters assert that nearly all politicians are corrupt, and 51% feel that the American political system doesn’t serve their interests. Furthermore, 48% believe electoral outcomes make no difference, and 35% have never felt impacted positively by political actions. Such sentiments indicate a growing disconnect between young Americans and their government, fostering a sense of disenfranchisement and political apathy.
Concerns about government capability also extend to specific events like another pandemic. Half of the young electorate is uneasy about the government’s preparedness for such crises, with only 14% confident in its handling of future pandemics. This skepticism reflects a broader trust deficit that has been exacerbated by recent challenges and governmental responses.
During the pandemic, only 11% of young voters reported increased happiness, contrasting sharply with the 77% who believe the pandemic has left the country worse off. This underscores the lingering societal and individual impacts of COVID-19, affecting perceptions of national well-being and government competence.
